So you were happy we sold out central midfield that had bundles of pace and power now your not happy we’ve not got pace and power.....
What did you think of their holding/defensive midfielder Wynaldum yesterday.....doesn’t seem to have much pace or power....seem to get by though

Its highly likely it will take 2 seasons to turn us around and that means another 3 transfer windows. I simply wanted this season to not worry about relegation issues and where the next 3 points is coming from. A nice season bobbing around 9th or 10th would be a massive step forward and especially with a few flashes of creativity and good football.

Early days but Wilshire and Noble in central midfield as a pair makes us highly vulnerable to pace. I suppose we need to now see if Obiang and/or Sanchez can help the situation? Mane particularly ran through midfield unchallenged so many times.

That said, playing a high line in the back four, as we all noted, was our undoing on most goals yesterday.

Agree. The full backs were either a) too high or b) too narrow and tacked in. Liverpool took advantage of both scenario's.

But Liverpool will also make you play badly. We gave the ball away too much as they are in your face constantly. Can be argued that players at that level should be able to keep possession under pressure but eventually it will cause problems.

The problem then with losing possession is that if MP is telling the fill backs to play high then you are screwed when they get the ball.

And I don't want to jump on Noble as much better DM's will be made to look foolish at Anfield this season but I have to agree with you. Once he has been by-passed then that is it. He is never going to get back goal-side again. Not sure he was too much to blame yesterday but, for me, Wilshere and our defence is going to need a lot better protection.

Positives for me where Balbuena looked decent. Wilishire and Rice looked decent. Fredericks was ok but always going to have a tough day and I am sure when he gets a chance to play on the front foot will look very good.

One concern for me is Antonio. He either a) doesn't want to do the tracking back work or b) can't do the tracking back work. I think that injury may have fucked him permanently and I just think without that pace and strength he had his lack of real craft will see him found out.

A positive was Antonio working a bit harder for the team. I actually remember a tackle in our penalty box.

Another difference between the two teams is that one recognised it's weaknesses and attempted to fix them and one team left a fucking gaping hole in the middle of the park and just decided to fucking leave it there. Fucking clowns.

Very much agree with that.

The big difference yesterday was that one side didn't give it away but the other one did. If you attack Liverpool and passes don't find their target or players lose possession by losing control you are in trouble and we lost possession or gifted possession away far too often. You then have whippets running at you and our midfield, as most have said, is far too off the pace.

I've always liked Noble and his positioning is actually good, the problem these days is that once your are beyond him he can't catch you so if other midfielders are ahead of him you are in trouble.

The formation didn't look quite right with the full backs far too narrow and we looked top heavy at times and as I say if you lose possession with three guys beyond the ball you have problems.

But it's early days. 10 odd new signings are going to take time to bed in but we need a results and a performance next week.

Re: ⚽ Liverpool v West Ham - Official Match Thread
I am not concerned too much about this result. Liverpool will run City close this season and we will not be the only team to go to Anfield this season and get made to look woefully inadequate. They just do not give you a second to relax and well played them.

But for us, if you look at it optimistically, we are a work in progress. Manager is very experienced and not only been successful with top teams but also turned the fortunes of Malaga and Villareal. That is the same job he has to do for us. But they obviously took some tonkings from the top teams whilst on that journey.

Lots of new players, new formations and it will take some time to gel. But at least now we have a manager that knows what needs doing. And not some bloke who will too often just look like a rabbit in headlights.

Funnily enough, on another day, it could have been a lot different. At 1-0 Arnie had two good chances to score and had he really been on it then who knows?

But its hard to analyse too deeply against Liverpool as they are so good and so I think the next game will be more of a yard-stick.

But from what I could see areas that need addressing are a lack of pace and bite in DM area and full-backs too high up and too exposed too often. But I am sure MP has already seen that and will be working on that.

Onwards and upwards. Lots to be excited about and we move on with positivity and I am sure we will get better each game.

We are a team who have bought 11 new players who need to bed in vrs a team who have one of the best home records in world football over the last year.

They have scored 3 or more goals at home more than 15 times in the last 12 month, including 4-0 vrs Arsenal and stuck 7 past Man City in two fixtures.

On top of that they conceded something like 15 goals there in all matches, in all competitions last season.

They have made a lot of teams look dog shit at Anfield. Not sure we should write off the season just yet.

Think the biggest thing to take out of yesterday is the fact we have spent £100M and not addressed the biggest issue within the squad. CDM.

Result needed against Bournemouth, our attacking talent will shine on saturday

In 2015/16 we beat Liverpool 3 times
Since then they have spent £110m on Salah & Van Dijk and another £180m this summer.

I loved the coverage on Sky. Three ex Liverpool players as "experts" and a bimbo for political correctness. Very balanced. I thought I had tuned into Liverpool fan TV or something.

gazza
thats the reality now

the likes of ourselves .. that need to spend 100 million just to stand still..or keep up..and thats what it is essentially

yes the squad was that shite

and the owners have only coughed up for that reason alone

this didnt need to be necessary of course if investment was forthcoming in the past few seasons

to put things into context

if we had a home game first up..(which isnt gonna happen for a while)...against the taffs..and won easily..most would be booking their Euro tickets already.

Re: ⚽ Liverpool v West Ham - Official Match Thread
I am not sure that I like expecting to be beaten 4-0 by Liverpool. This will need to become a yardstick against which future progress will need to be measured.

I like some of what MP is trying to do. I see versatility and the ability to try different things. I think that if I could create a clone with the ball playing ability and speed of Masuaku together with the crossing ability of Cresswell - ah !!

Wilshere looked good and engaged.
Felipe Anderson (found out why EPL is not Serie A).
Antonio - looked oddly sluggish
Noble - does seem the "odd man out" in midfield
Rice - a good performance for a rising player - but not good enough for the EPL
Arnie - didn't have it today
Snodgrass - "The proverbial white flag - I might suggest"

Onward and Upward.... this was the final pre-season game - and we were sized, measured and found wanting....

Willshire and Noble seemed to be getting in each other’s way as much as anything.

I think the key point is that Liverpool are a very good side. It was the way they pressed us as much as anything. Watching them in the champions league semi they have managed to do this against better sides than us.

It’s unfortunate that we had to meet them in their first game, but at least it’s out the way and should focus a few minds after a very easy preseason.

All the usual points about knee jerking etc are here as per.
But we had a right to expect a bit more in the way of cohesion and/or innovation..
Even from the standpoint of trying something different when it clearly was not working.Or to put it another way a bit more that a couple shots on goal.
We did not seem very well coordinated - begs the question how many games did this line up actual play together. How prepared was this team.
Yes we will far better against Bournemouth I'm sure but the games against the top teams will define how much we have really improved. Something didn't seem right with the Rice - Noble - Wilshere combo (as some have pointed out) this may need attention as a first priority.
